Education

Education is a core tenet of Lycoming Audubon Society’s mission, reaching community members of all ages through a range of programs and events. The Chapter holds monthly programs, and partners with schools, state parks, the Waterdale Environmental Education Center, Rider Park, the James V. Brown Library, and other organizations to deliver hands-on conservation learning. Together, these efforts ensure that birding and conservation education remain accessible, engaging, and welcoming to newcomers and lifelong naturalists alike.

Youth Programming

In area schools, and in partnership with the Waterdale Environmental Education Center, Rider Park, and the James V. Brown Library, Lycoming Audubon annually delivers educational programming about birds and their habitats to families and hundreds of area youth. Additionally, Lycoming Audubon awards Student Scholarships each year to two deserving high school and/or college students who have been actively engaged with our Chapter’s work.

Library programs

Lycoming Audubon Society partners with the James V. Brown Library to bring nature education to the community, offering programs on birds and nature every year that are suitable for all ages. Beyond the library’s walls, the partnership includes joint bird walks, kid-friendly outings, and programs that introduce newer birders to common species and wildflowers. These events and programs reflect Lycoming Audubon’s commitment to collaborative partnerships and making birding and conservation accessible to people of every age.

Chapter Programs

Monthly programs featuring expert birders and naturalists are held from Sept-May at the Taber Museum in Williamsport, and are available to a wider audience via zoom. Past programs have featured presentations about bird vocalizations: “A World of Song and Wonder,” native plant gardening: “Your Yard Can Be Good Bird Habitat” by two Lycoming Audubon expert gardeners, and the Red-tailed Hawk Project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Tabling Events

Lycoming Audubon strives to educate the public about birds and the natural world through our participation in multiple environmental education events at state parks, at the Master Gardener’s Kids’ Day, and at other venues.
